it’s literally impossible to have a normal discussion about media consumption on this website because every time you say ‘this website moralizes media consumption to a bizarre degree and treats what shows people watch like the be all end all of activism’ then people who think there’s nothing wrong with writing incest fanfiction start agreeing with you and every time you say ‘media consumption is not a morally neutral activity and fiction does impact reality, and there is certain media that you can’t ethically consume’ then people who call stephen universe ‘irredeemable media’ start agreeing with you

sorry for comment leaving but also imo also worth pointing out that “consumption” of media is not inherently ANYTHING, morally or value-wise, because consumption is not a single mode of engagement with a text. though of course this changes radically if you are saying “consumption” in the fandom-y sense (which I take this post to be doing, and in that case pretty firmly agree with the above statements in that context) then that’s a highly specific mode of readership compared to literally any other type of engagement.

like the goodness or badness of a work does not rub off on you by virtue of it being absorbed through your eyeballs, it’s very much a matter of what you bring to the table as an Active Participant and how you are choosing to interpret or understand or analyze its meaning as a text. there are absolutely terrible immoral things in this world that offer meaningful lessons by nature of their terribleness, and consuming these things is not itself an unethical act (far from it), but the moral and intellectual value of that consumption is entirely dependent on your own engagement as a reader and the types of knowledge you’re seeking in those texts.

which is to say that studying old nazi propaganda is an incredibly effective tool for understanding history and combatting the resurgence of similar reactionary movements, although these pieces of propaganda can just as easily be used to further the very same reactionary movements—and it’s entirely dependent on people’s modes of engagement, because “consumption” is not a uniform or unilateral act. which is ALSO to say that reading and writing incest fanfiction as a hobby is not a particularly constructive or useful mode of engagement (and is in fact downright harmful and weird), so it’s absolutely accurate to delineate this specific phenomenon as bad (or “unethical”) consumption, lol.

there's so little taste in advertising that it was bound to happen sooner or later, but would you like to take one guess as to why the JP barbie account had to make a post disavowing the actions of the US barbie account

tribulation-of-somnolence

Now when is Japan going to disavow what Imperial Japan did in Nanking

toskarin

now hear me out, but seeing as we're not beholden to shielding anyone from criticism in applying criticism to others, we may be able to work towards believing both

"the actions of imperial japan were fucking horrific, evil, and should be acknowledged and disavowed by the government"

and also "no circumstances could have justified the united states of america indiscriminately murdering several hundred thousand civilians for what was ultimately a vanity project"

bombs don't discriminate between good people and bad people, adults and children, or anything else at all. nuclear bombs, less so

"why do we even have that lever" is made funnier by the fact there are only 2 levers to begin with (disguised as a pair of tusks on a statue)

image

i find the implications hilarious:

  1. kronk only had to remember the location of one lever, and couldn't even manage that
  2. but on the other hand, it's easy to get two identical unlabelled levers confused, this one's on yzma tbh
  3. yzma only needed to make one lever to begin with, but she actively chose to turn the second tusk into a functioning trapdoor. she could have just...just not connected the second tusk to anything. it didn't need to have a function
  4. upon reflection, this also answers the question itself: "why do we even HAVE that lever?" it's because yzma herself specifically designed it as a booby trap. "why do we have that lever?" because yzma had it built to keep people out of her secret lair! yzma made the very purposeful choice to put that lever there! and then both she and her inept henchman immediately forgot about her own booby trap! yzma that is YOUR LEVER!!!!!
biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

why do we even have that lever? because you built it yzma. these are the machinations of your own design yzma! YOU ARE TANGLED IN A WEB OF YOUR OWN WEAVING YZMA! YZMA THAT IS YOUR CROCODILE!!!

shout-out to everyone in the notes claiming that kronk pulled the wrong lever on purpose. you are so right, this is the face of a himbo who knows what's up

#the best thing about kronk is that he is very very competent just at nothing in his actual job description #yzma keeps him around so she can be competent-passing in comparison but she is ALSO a dumbass! #dream team

Lets be honest: Every Sonic the Hedgehog character is capable of Murder

grandpriestofthealpaca

Maybe not cream the bunny and Charly the bee, they are both 6 years old and I think the only way they could do it would be accidental

mathewryf

Reminder that both Sonic and Tails have bodycounts, and the only reason Tails’ bodycount isn’t higher is because of Sonic.

sonisis

At some point the fandom needs to get together and confirm everyone’s total bodycount.

Cananocally the ones with such a high body count that they can’t be counted anymore:

  • Shadow the Hedgehog
  • dR.eGGMAN
  • Chaos(drowned a city, and eradicated the echidna. )
